How to use Meta Tags in your store to improve SEO

Auctiva Commerce allows you to add meta tags to your product pages, category pages and the storefront pages so that keyword and content descriptions can be found by search engine crawlers. This tutorial will show you how to add meta tags for your store.

What are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are a part of the HTML code in your store webpages that inform some search engine web crawlers about the type of content in the webpage. This can include content descriptions and keywords as well as other meta data elements. Not all search engines use meta data to categorize webpages, but it's considered good practice to add keywords and content descriptions when possible.

How to add Meta Tags in your store

There are several areas where you can add meta tags to your store. You can add meta tags to every inventory item page, to each store category page and to your store homepage. First, this tutorial will cover meta tags at the product level. By entering keyword meta tags into your product webpages, you can help automate keyword meta tag generation for the category pages.

Step 1. Add Meta Tags to Product Details.
  • Go to Inventory > Add/Manage Inventory. The Manage Inventory page will load.
  • Find a product that will have meta tags added to it. Use the search tool if necessary.
  • Click on the Edit link next to the product that will have meta tags added. The Product Details page will load.
  • Scroll down to the Descriptions section and find the HTML Head field.
  • HTML Head: In this field you can enter in the meta tags as necessary or you can click on the Meta Generate link to have the meta tags generated for you.
  • Using the Meta Generator tool you can select either the name, http-equiv or scheme property. For keywords and content descriptions, choose the "name" property. If you are entering keywords, type "keywords" into the next field. If you are entering a content description, type "description" into the field.
  • Content: Enter a value for the meta tag. If you are adding keyword meta data, enter the keywords into this field separated by commas (e.g., Apple, iPod, touch, mp3, player). If you are entering a description for the page, type of the description in this field (e.g., Buy now and take advantage of free shipping for the Apple iPod Touch MP3 player.).
  • Click on the Update button. ┬áThe meta tag will be inserted into the HTML Head field. You can edit this meta tag directly in the field if necessary.
  • Click on the Save button.
Step 2. Add Meta Tags to Store and Categories.

In this step, you will add meta tags to storefront pages and category pages.

  • Go to Marketing > Search Engine Optimization > Meta Data & Site Integration.
  • Store Front Meta Tags: In this field, you can directly enter you meta data code. If you need help creating the meta tag, click on the "Add Meta Tag" link.
  • Using the Add Meta Tag Generator select either the name, http-equiv or scheme property. For keywords and content descriptions, choose the "name" property. If you are entering keywords, type "keywords" into the next field (do not include quotation marks). If you are entering a content description, type "description" into the field (do not include quotation marks).
  • Enter a value for the meta tag. If you are adding keyword meta data, enter the keywords into this field separated by commas (e.g., Apple,iPod,touch,mp3,music). If you are entering a description for the page, type of the description in this field (e.g., Buy now and take advantage of free shipping for the Apple iPod Touch MP3 player.).
  • Click on the Add Tag button and the meta tag will be inserted into the Store Front Meta Tags field.
  • Add more meta tags if necessary.
  • Select the checkbox below the Add Tag button to have meta tags automatically generated for category pages. The category meta tags are based on the product meta data keywords (Step 1) and any keywords entered in the Search Keywords field of the Product Details page.
  • Click on the "Save Meta Tags" button to finish updating the storefront and category meta tags.

This completes the task of creating meta tags for product pages, category pages and the storefront pages.
