How to associate your Store Categories and Products to External Category Trees

Associating your store categories and products to external category trees, such as Google Product Search (a.k.a Google Base) and the Auctiva Marketplace Platform (AMP) category tree for Auctiva's soon-to-be-released shopping portal, is an easy way to help your products gain even more exposure to buyers.

For Google Product Search, the categories you associate with your products will be used to populate the Product Type attribute within your Auctiva Commerce Google Base feeds. For the Auctiva Marketplace Platform category tree, mapping to categories will help buyers find your products on the Auctiva shopping portal that is to be released in 2010.

This is an optional feature but it is highly recommended that you take advantage of it. To make this process as easy as possible, you have the ability to map your store categories to external category trees, as well as your products, both individually and in bulk.

How do I map individual Products to External Category Trees?

To associate individual products to external categories do the following:

  • Go to Inventory >>> Add/Manage Inventory.
  • From the product list click Edit on the product you want to add an external category association to.
  • Click on the Categories tab.
  • Click the Plus symbol for the desired external category tree to open the tree.
  • Using the navigation tools within the selected tree navigate to the desired category - most likely the one that most closely matches your product.
  • When you find the category you'd like to associate your product with click on it to highlight it. The selected mapping will be shown via a breadcrumb trail immediately below the header row for the external category tree you are using.
  • Click Save to save the selected mapping or click Clear to select a different mapping.
  • Repeat the process above for a second category mapping for the product if desired.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of October 12, 2009 there is a bug with Google Merchant Center where they are not correctly reading and displaying multiple categories per product. Because of this bug Auctiva Commerce is only sending one category to Google Merchant Center per product. You may still map to multiple categories for Google Merchant Center if desired but until the bug is fixed by Google Merchant Center (eta currently unknown) Auctiva Commerce will only include one category per product in the Google Merchant Center feeds.
  • Repeat the process above for each external category tree you would like to associate your product to.

How do I map my Products to External Category Trees in Bulk?

As noted above you can map your individual products to external category trees via the Categories tab. However, you may find that you want to edit category associations for a group of products at once. To do this you can use the Bulk Assign Platform Categories feature from the Manage Inventory page:

  • Go to Inventory >>> Add/Manage Inventory.
  • From the product list select the group of products you like want to add/edit external category associations for.
  • Click on the Bulk Assign Platform Categories button. The Bulk Assign Platform Categories page will load.
  • Click the Plus symbol for the desired external category tree to open the tree.
  • Using the navigation tools within the selected tree navigate to the desired category - most likely the one that most closely matches your selected products.
  • When you find the category you'd like to associate your product with click on it to highlight it. The selected mapping will be shown via a breadcrumb trail immediately below the header row for the external category tree you are using.
  • Click Select to save the selected mapping or click Clear to select a different mapping.
  • Repeat the process above for a second category mapping for the selected product set if desired.
  • Repeat the process above for each external category tree you would like to associate your products to.
  • Click Save Categories when you have completed all desired edits.

How do I map my Store Categories to External Category Trees?

As noted above you can map your store products to external category trees. You may also map your store categories to external category trees. Once an association is created between a store category and an external category, any products susbsequently created in that store category will inherit the associated external category as well. For example, if store category A is associated to external category B, any products subsequently created under store category A will be automatically associated to external category B. To map to your store categories to external category trees do the following:

  • Go to Inventory >>> Add/Manage Categories.
  • Click the Checkbox next to the Store Category you want to associate external categories to.
  • Click the Assign Category Defaults button. The available external category trees will load in the right half of the screen.
  • Click the Plus symbol for the desired external category tree to open the tree.
  • Using the navigation tools within the selected tree navigate to the desired category - most likely the one that most closely matches your Store category.
  • When you find the category you'd like to associate your Store category to click on it to highlight it. The selected mapping will be shown via a breadcrumb trail immediately below the header row for the external category tree you are using.
  • Continue the mapping process for any other external category trees if desired.
  • When you have completed your mapping for the selected store categry click on the Done button. This will close the category mapping window.
  • Repeat the process noted above for any other Store Categories you would like to associate to external category trees.

Important Notes for Category Level Mapping

  • Category Mapping is one-to-one; meaning you may associate your store category to one external category, per category tree.
