How to add an Order Coupon

An order coupon allows a customer to get discounts for an order. You can limit the coupon usage by selected user groups, date ranges, a minimum purchase amount, certain products and by the number of uses. This tutorial will show you how to add an order coupon to your Auctiva Commerce store.

What is an Order Coupon?

An order coupon is a type of coupon that applies discounts by line items in a customer's cart. This means that the order coupon applies a discount for every eligible line item. The significant difference between an order coupon and a product coupon is that an order coupon can be limited to a minimum purchase amount. The product coupon is uniquely limited by a minimum quantity purchased and can be applied to multiple items.

Coupon Limitations

A customer can only use one coupon (i.e., order coupon, product coupon, shipping coupon) per order. When a customer attempts to apply an additional coupon, the previous coupon is removed. A prompt will display that tells the customer that the new coupon is in use and the other was removed. A customer can enter the coupon code for the removed coupon to re-apply the coupon. In this manner, a customer can enter in coupon codes repeatedly to see which coupon will give them the biggest discount.

How to add an order coupon

Adding an order coupon will make it immediately effective unless you specify a future date range. It's always a good idea to test coupons to make sure they are working as you intended.

Step 1. Select coupon type.
  • Go to Marketing> Coupons.
  • Click on the Add Coupon button.
  • Select the radio button next to Order Coupon.
  • Click on the Next button. The Add Order Coupon page will load.
Step 2. Enter coupon information.
  • Name: Enter the name of the order coupon. This order coupon is unique to your store and the name should be something that is easy for you to identify. The order coupon name will appear to your customers in the order details on the storefront.
  • Coupon Code: Enter the unique code for this order coupon. Customers will enter this code at checkout to receive the discounts from the coupon.
  • Discount Amount: You can choose a fixed amount discount for an entire order or a percentage discount for an entire order. For a fixed amount discount, enter the value that will be discounted from an order and select Fixed Amount from the drop down menu. This is a flat amount that is subtracted from the order amount. For a percentage discount enter the percentage amount in the field that will be discounted from the order and select Percent (%) from the drop down menu. This option will discount the order amount by a percentage.
  • Max Value: Enter the maximum discount amount allowed by this order coupon. It’s highly recommended that you use this field if you are also using the Percent option for the Discount Amount.
  • Min Purchase: Enter the minimum purchase amount required for this order coupon. Customers who have order amounts that are equal to or greater than this value will be eligible to use the order coupon. Leave this field blank if there is no minimum purchase amount.
  • Start Date: The first date this order coupon can be used. To use this feature check the box next to Start Date and enter a date, either using the text field, or the calendar menu. The date chosen will be the first day the order coupon will be effective.
  • End Date: The last date this order coupon can be used. To use this feature check the box next to End Date and enter a date, either using the text field, or the calendar menu. The date chosen will be the last day the order coupon will be effective.
  • Uses per Customer: Enter the maximum number of times this order coupon can be used by a single customer.
  • Max Uses: Enter the maximum number of times this order coupon can be used in your store. The order coupon will no longer be effective when the total number of uses reaches this value.
  • Allow Combine: To enable this coupon to work with other coupons, select the Allow Combine checkbox. A coupon with Allow Combine enabled will work with other Allow Combine enabled coupons. If you want this coupon to be the only coupon applied to an order, do not select this checkbox.
  • Product Rule: To indicate any product restrictions for this coupon, select your choice from the drop-down menu. The "Valid for any product" option will make all products in your inventory eligible for the order coupon. The "Valid only with selected products" option will allow you to add certain products that are eligible for this coupon. The "Not valid for selected products" option will allow you to add certain products that are ineligible for this coupon. When either the "Valid only with selected products" or "Not valid for selected products" options are selected, you will need to add products to the Product Rule. Click on Next button and the "Manage" link will display. Click the "Manage" link and the Linked Products page will load. Search for the products to be added to the Product rule and click the Add button next to the products. You can remove products by clicking on the Remove icon in the Linked Products box. Click the Finish button when you're done with this task.
  • Groups: To designate this coupon to be used only for certain user groups, click the radio button next to Selected Groups. New choices will appear. Select the checkboxes next to the groups that are allowed to use this order coupon.
  • Click on the Next button
  • Click on the Save and Close button. The Manage Coupons page will load and you will see the order coupon you just created.

This completes the task of creating an order coupon. You can check the order coupon usage by going to Marketing> Coupons. The uses per coupon displays in the Uses column of the Coupon table. You can click on the Uses link to view details. Coupon usage details are only available for orders with payments that have been processed in the Order Manager. You can also view Coupon Reports by going to Reports> Marketing> Coupons.
